Here is how to open a pomegranate, as easily and mess free as possible!
How to Open A Pomegranate
A bowl of water
To open the pomegranate:
Cut around the stem of the pomegranate with the tip of the knife and remove it.
Locate the “bulges” around the pomegranate. They are the thin membranes that separate the seeds into sections within the pomegranate.
Once you locate the bulges, score them with the knife.
Submerge the pomegranate under water, and break first in half, and then into the smaller sections.
Use your fingers to remove the pomegranate arils into the bowl of water. The membranes should float to the top while the arils sink to the bottom.
Once you remove all the arils from the pomegranate sections, skim out the membranes from the bowl using your fingers. Discard.
Pour the bowl of water and arils through a strainer.
Once the arils are mostly dry, transfer them to a bowl and enjoy!
Once you have a big bowl of pomegranate arils, you can simply eat them as is, or use them to top hot cereal or granola, salads, or roasted veggies. You can also try one of these recipes:
