Ringworm Relief

Ringworm infection (also known as ‘dermatophytosis’) is a condition where a fungus infects the skin in us humans. The term ‘ringworm’ is a bit misleading, as the condition is not caused by a parasitic worm but rather by several different species of fungi. The term comes from the characteristic blemish expressed on the skin post-infection - as the blemish looks a little bit like a rose-coloured ring.

Ringworm / Dermatophytosis Info

“The vice-president of an advertising agency is a bit of executive fungus that forms on a desk that has been exposed to conference.”

Fred Allen

Infection with ringworm (also known as ‘dermatophytosis’) is a condition caused by a fungal infection of the skin in us humans, our domesticated animals (sheep and cattle) and common household pets like cats. The term 'ringworm' is a bit misleading, as the condition is not caused by a parasitic worm but rather by several different species of fungi.

The fungi that cause parasitic infection are called dermatophytes. These dermatophytes feed on keratin in the skin, hair, and nails of its selected hosts. They thrive on skin that is warm and moist, but can also survive directly on the outside of hair follicles or in their interior.

Often, misdiagnosis can result in the treatment of ringworm with a topical steroid (a standard treatment of the superficially similar pityriasis rosea).  This can result in tinea incognito, a condition where ringworm fungus will grow without typical features like a distinctive raised border.

There are several natural health products available for ring worm infection.

Horopito is a NZ native plant used to treat ringworm in the rongoa tradition of Maori herbal medicine.  It has a proven generalised anti-fungal action and is an effective treatment.

Manuka is another NZ native with amazing anti-microbial action, including specific anti-fungal properties.  It can be taken internally in tea or tincture form, or applied topically in the form of manuka honey or manuka oil.

Tea tree oil is a known antifungal agent, and has been shown to be effective in vitro against multiple dermatophytes found on the skin of humans.

Echinacea has also been linked to potentially stimulating the immune system’s response to pathogens including fungi, precisely due to its augmenting effect on the immune system.

Product Reviews

  • I hoped for a better result

    star- web-tec.info

I find this product stops the fungal nail from getting worse, but has not improved or healed it.

  • Keeps my colds/flus away

If I feel like a cold coming on, I take the echinacea 3 times a day. I have tried other echinacea liquids and in tablet form, but they haven't worked as good as Weleda.
